TIPS FOR YOUNG COSPLAYERS AND THEIR PARENTS/GUARDIANS

Updated: Jan 12, 2022

These tips are for young cosplayers or parent/guardian of a young cosplayer. It feels amazing to see young cosplayers because they are the next generation that is going to continue withy this art form.

Cosplay is so much more than just wearing a costume. It teaches important life skills such as problem-solving. Here are the tips to help young cosplayers be explore this hobby and have a fun experience.

OPEN COMMUNICATION

It is so important that both the parent and the child have open communication with each other. Some kids say that they want to start cosplaying but they do not want to tell their parent but I recommend that you should not hide it from your parent. Cosplay is just like any other hobby like sports or music. You are doing nothing wrong.

Parents and guardians may see dressing up in costume when it is not Halloween as a little bit strange but you should try and show interest. Be encouraging about it even if you do not necessarily understand it. After all, it is something that they will love and if they love it then that means that you can use it to motivate them to being a better person. Also, in terms of hobbies, cosplaying is incredibly flexible in terms of hours being committed to it.

CHOOSING A COSPLAY

When choosing a cosplay, choose age appropriate cosplays. Make sure that you are choosing cosplays that are not for adults and highly revealing. Leave that for when you are an adult. Yes I get it, they may be your absolutely favorite character, but just trust me when I say this, not all adults are good adults.

Use this time that you have now to just craft and to enjoy yourself and to really build those skills because when you are an adult you will be able to make these adult costumes if you so wish to do them in a really fantastic way.

MAKING THE COSTUMES

You may not actually know how to sew or how to make armor and that's okay! The good news is that you have a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips from YouTube, blogs and other resources. Also, for the young cosplayers, you probably already have people in your life who can help you create the costumes.

Parents and guardians can help in creating the costume. This would be a really good opportunity to do an activity with your children. Who knows, you might even enjoy it. I have seen parents and their children who cosplay together.

BUYING COSPLAYS

Most young cosplayers say they don't have the money to either make and buy cosplays and that's completely okay. There are ways you can actually save your funds like from your pocket money, doing errands or even ask for some money from your parent/guardian.

You can also order cosplays online. There are some that are expensive but there are also cheaper options. If you are ordering something online, young cosplayers make sure that you get your parent's help because at the end of the day it is their address that you are going to be shipping to and maybe using their card as well.

If you are a young cosplayer or a parent/guardian of a young cosplayer, I hope that these tips might have helped you.
